How to change the Windows XP splash screen

By admin | May 7, 2007

Are you tired of the boring old image that comes up when you’re logging into Windows XP?  Well luckily, you can change it with the following methods.

First off, my preferred method to do this is with a simple application called Bootskin by Stardock , so I would go that route if you aren’t an advanced user.

If you REALLY want to do this manually without software, here is the manual method:

1. open your C: drive and double click on boot.ini, which should open it with notepad

2. add  /noguiboot /bootlogo at the end of fifth line that should begin with multi(0)disk(0).. make sure you add a space at the end if there isn’t one already, since each command must be seperated by a space

3. click Start ->Run and type in %systemroot% and hit enter, and copy your new boot image into here.  It must be called boot.bmp, it must be a 16 color, 4 bit bitmap file format, and it has to be 640×480 image size.

Please only do this if you’re absolutely comfortable modifying system files, as this can cause major boot problems if you don’t get it right.  Also, when you do this, you will lose the boot status screen that shows your boot progress.
